The Birth

“I can’t do this! It hurts too much,” I scream. “Come on baby, just a few more pushes, you can do this! You’re stronger than you know,” Mae says. I look around the room and see Nick and my mother at my side and the entire Salem Coven spread out through the room, everyone chanting spells to help ease the pain. My midwife, Megan is holding my hand and rubbing my back, trying to soothe me as best as she can. I’m kneeling in a pool of water in my living room; an at home birth felt necessary for a magical baby. “Push Emma, she’s almost here! Push!” Megan says. With one more big breath, I grip down on the sides of the pool and push down with everything I have. “She’s here and she’s perfect Emma, you did it!” Mae cries.

Suddenly the room is filled with laughter and cheers and the baby is crying as they put her in my arms. “She’s beautiful,” I say as I look down at her. “Do we have a name yet?” Megan asks. “Not yet,” I say looking over at Nick. He kisses me on the forehead and rubs his finger against the baby’s cheek. “That’s alright, for right now, she’ll be baby girl Porter,” Megan says. “Oh no! It’s baby girl Woods,” I say smiling at Nick. “She’s 8 pounds, 3 ounces and 16 inches. Born on June 3rd, 2068 at 3:33pm,” Megan announces. “I’m so proud of you baby, you did great and she’s beautiful. You’re going to love being a mother so much,” Mae says. “Thank you for being here mom, it means the world to me,” I say. “Now, I must be going dear, but I’ll be back for a visit soon. Love you,” she says as she slowly starts to fade away.

“Ok ladies, why don’t we start clearing out and give them some time alone,” Genny announces. “Yes, thank you all so much for coming, I appreciate it so much,” I say to the ladies. As the Salem Witches leave, I get a huge gush of Congratulations and then finally it’s just me, Nick, Megan, and Genny. “Thank you Genny for everything you’ve done today,” I say to her. “You are family, this is what family does for each other Emma,” she says. “Now let’s get you in some warm, dry clothes,” she says. I hand the baby to Nick and let Megan and Genny help me out of the pool and into the bedroom. I strip down and get into the shower with their help and take a quick, hot shower to help calm my muscles down. Once I’m done, I get changed into a summer dress and head back out into the living room, sitting down on the couch.

“I’ll take care of the pool and clean up,” Megan says. “Don’t you worry about a thing.” “Thank you so much,” I reply, adjusting so I can sit comfortably which is extraordinarily hard after just have given birth.
